Pain treatment - different for diabetes, shingles and
HIV
Pain is. Right? No, not quite right. At least 3 million
Americans suffer from some form of neuropathic pain, but different causes. More
than half of these pain sufferers suffer from an autoimmune disease, such as shingles,
diabetes or human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
Recognizing and treating the underlying disease can
significantly reduce the amount and frequency of pain. There is a wide variety
of pharmocologic (drug) treatments availalbe to treat the symptoms of pain, but
only certain medications help for diseases related to the specific neuropathic
pain.
Many doctors do not recognize the disease or underlying
condition know and maybe do not associate the disease especially with the
appropriate pharmacological treatment. Often, people with herpes zoster,
diabetes and even HIV are given non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or
aspirin - which has very little to relieve the patient's pain. Instead, their
unique type of pain can be relieved by appropriate treatment analgesic, such as
anticonvulsants, lidocaine patch, or tricyclic antidepressants.
At a satellite symposium held in conjunction with the
Meeting January 29, 2009 Annual American Academy of Pain Medicine, doctors have
discussed this research may be the best treatment for pain associated with shingles,
diabetes indicates HIV and other autoimmune diseases. If you are being treated
for neuropathic pain and the pain has not diminished, ask your doctor about the
possibility of being treated with drugs that may be more specific to your
particular disease. A group of doctors presented a satellite symposium to
discuss this issue in collaboration with the January 9, 2009 25 Annual Meeting
of the American Academy
There are several available and recommended for pain, PHN
(post-herpetic neuralgia) treatments. associated with herpes zoster
and also for pain, DPN (diabetic peripheral neuropathy) associated with
diabetes. Gabapentin, pregabalin, and tricyclic antidepressants are recommended
as first-line treatment, while opiates, which areUsed to treat many different
types of pain, are considered second-line therapies or third. However, for
neuropathic pain associated with HIV, there are some recommended treatments.
The only recommended treatment, lamotrigine may reduce pain.
